The universal language of syncopation, dissonance and eccentric gestures. Performances by the Russian Futurists and Valentin Parnach’s Sudden Dance

The first decades of the twentieth century in Russia – as in Europe – were a time of the emergence of new ideas and practices in the arts, including performative ones. In the context of the traumatic events of the early 20th century, these practices often had a therapeutic and self-therapeutic effect. For poets, musicians and dancers, the creative process became an act of self-renewal, a way of expressing unconscious impulses or a way of coming to terms with traumatic experiences. It is no coincidence that one of the most famous concepts of this period was ‚improvisational and everyday theatre for oneself‘ by Nikolai Evreinov, the director and discoverer of theatre therapy.

In the lecture we will talk about the performances of Russian poet-futurists, and in particular we will look at the ’sudden dance‘ of Valentin Parnakh, poet and dancer. We will be aided by an analysis of photographic, filmic and literary materials, with an emphasis on their kinesthetic perception. Central to our reflections will be the power of art to influence not only the audience but also the performer.
